SIDE AIR BAG CUSHION HAVING VARIABLE VENTS

PURPOSE: A side air bag cushion having variable vents is provided to vary a gas vent area when a cushion is deformed due to an external force by forming many straight vents in a tether used as a cushion. CONSTITUTION: An air bag cushion is a body(100) having an inlet port(111) and an upper chamber(120) and a lower chamber(110) divided via a tether(130). The tether has many straight vents. The vents are formed by laser processing in a rectangular slit shape. The vents are extended in accordance with a direction of a shock applied to the body. When the upper and lower chambers are inflated differentially, a specific part of a vehicle and a thorax of an occupant pressurize the body. The tether is pressurized, and width of the body is reduced. The vents of the tether are deformed to an oval shape, and a gas vent area is enlarged. Thus, gas is supplied to the upper chamber from the lower chamber through the vents. To promptly inflate the upper chamber, gas is flowed at a high velocity. Therefore, the upper chamber is expanded promptly and an impact applied to the face of the occupant is damped.
