In the pyrolysis of hydrocarbons to acetylene and ethylene the hydrocarbons are mixed with a combustion gas and after a first cracking period a coolant other than a hydrocarbon is injected to cool the reactants by 50-200 DEG C. and after a second cracking period the reactants are quenched. The first cracking period is at 1000-2000 DEG C. for 0.01-0.0001 second and the second at 800-1950 DEG C. for 0.1-0.001 second. The coolant may be hydrogen or steam. In the apparatus used the hydrocarbon is injected before passing the combustion gas through a throat section and the positions of injection of the cooling materials are preferably variable.
