An insulated wire preferable for a coil of an electric machine such as a motor or a transformer and excellent in insulation performance and machining-resistance. Recently, with the reduction in size and progress in performance of electric machines, insulated wires have been used in a very narrow space increasingly. The insulating coating of an insulated wire must be given a resistance to machining when the insulating wire is coiled for use in such an electric machine. Therefore, there have been proposed various methods using an insulating paint made of a polyamide-imide resin or a trialkylamine. However these methods involve a problem that the wear resistance degrades to the level of conventional insulated wires as the thickness of the insulating coating decreases. An insulated wire according to the invention is produced by coating a conductor with a silane-modified polyamide-imide resin produced by reacting a polyamide-imide resin having a carboxyl group and/or an anhydrite group at a terminal with an alkoxyl containing a glycidyl ether group or an allyloxysilane partial condensation and by baking the conductor. The insulated wire has excellent performance equivalent to or better than that of conventional wires having a thick coating even if the insulated wire of the invention has a thin coating.
