Preventing eating of plant material by animals, e.g. rodents, insects or birds, using non-phytotoxic quinoline derivative selected from echinorine, 1-methyl-4-quinolone and echinopsidine

A composition for controlling eating by animals comprises at least quinoline derivative (I) selected from 1-methyl-4-methoxyquinolinium (Ia), 1-methyl-4-quinolone (Ib) and 1-methyl-4-iminoquinoline (Ic), together with conventional formulation auxiliaries. A composition for controlling eating by animals comprises at least quinoline derivative (I) selected from 1-methyl-4-methoxyquinolinium (no anion specified; echinorine) of formula (Ia), 1-methyl-4-quinolone (echinopsine) of formula (Ib) and 1-methyl-4-iminoquinoline (echinopsidine) of formula (Ic), together with conventional formulation auxiliaries. No anions are specified in the formulae): [Image] An independent claim is included for the use of compositions containing (I) for controlling eating by animals. - ACTIVITY : Animal repellent; pesticide. Tests were carried out in male and female house mice (Mus musculus), using feed cakes formed from rye flour and ground globe thistle fruit containing bitter components (ca. 2 % echinorine (Ia)). No gnawing or eating was observed, even at a flour to thistle residue ratio of 5 : 1. For comparison, if a lupine residue containing bitter components was used, gnawing was observed at a flour to residue ratio of 1 : 1 and eating was observed at a flour to residue ratio of 2 : 1. - MECHANISM OF ACTION : None given.
