An inverter device is provided with a circuit that protects its high-voltage IC for driving a bridge circuit from damage and malfunction. The inverter device comprises an inverter circuit including at least one pair of switching elements (Q1, Q4) connected in series across a DC source in the forward direction; an inverter drive circuit for driving the switching elements, the inverter drive circuit including at least one high-voltage IC (13) whose input and output signal reference potentials are different from each other potential; a clamping circuit (D13) for setting a high-voltage reference terminal (Vs), to which the output signal reference potential is applied, at the potential of low-voltage reference terminal (VSS) to which the IC reference potential and the input signal reference potential are applied; and a circuit (R21, D21) for dividing the voltage between the low-voltage reference terminal and the negative terminal of the DC source.
