PURPOSE: A formatting method for an optical recording medium is provided to complete formatting regardless of an error slipping replacement caused by lack of a spare area. CONSTITUTION: By input of a formatting command, an error block is registered as a PDL to perform a slipping replacement for a spare area. Then, an error in the slipping replacement caused by lack of the spare area is checked. In case of the allocation of smaller number of spare areas than the number of the registered PDL, the error in the slipping replacement is generated. Then, the number of PDL not slipped is checked. Then, the number of the not slipped PDL is eliminated from an entire recording capacity.
