An information processing device and method, and a program, wherein first, second inheritance data is created from first inheritance data prescribing the shape and/or behavior of a virtual organism; second, the gene data on the virtual organism is diagnosed, and a predetermined added value is imparted to the virtual organism according to the results of the diagnosis if the gene data satisfies a predetermined condition; and third, information about the parents of each of the registered virtual organisms created by mating is stored in order, and the pedigree of a specified virtual organism is investigated according to the information. A data holding device comprises first storage means where inheritance data prescribing the shape and/or behavior of a virtual organism is stored/held, communication means for communicating the inheritance data with an external device, and second holding means where inheritance data about another virtual organism is stored/held through the communication means.
