1,188,181. Seaming non-metallic sheet material. B. U. GUSTAFSSON, and B. A. B. EKSTRAND. 7 April, 1967 [15 April, 1966], No. 16025/67. Heading B5K. A method of welding together elements 1, 2 which, in the region where they are to be welded, present two parts comprising the same or different thermoplastic material, comprises heating welding material 4 which is arranged between the two parts and which itself is at least partly of thermoplastic material, the material 4 containing a plasticizer which, on being heated, diffuses into the two parts and softens the thermoplastic material of the two parts so that the elements 1, 2 are united, the welding being effected by resistance heating of one or more electric conductors 3 which are embedded in the material 4 and remain therein after welding. Preferably, the plasticizer is used in such a proportion relatively to the thermoplastic welding material and/or in such a concentration that it is volatilized during heating, the supply of heat being progressive. The welding material may be in the form of a filament, bar, strip or film of any desired profile. In one embodiment, Fig. 1, opposed surfaces of two plates 1, 2 of thermoplastic material are welded together using an electrical conductor 3, e.g. a metal wire, enclosed by a sheath 4 of a synthetic resin containing a plasticizer, e.g. di-iso-octyl phthalate or di-n-octyl phthalate. In a further embodiment, Fig. 3, plates 11, 12 are welded edge-to-edge using a conductor 13 enclosed by an H-section sheath 14 the limbs of which embrace the adjoining edges of the plates 11, 12. |
