A boiling water reactor fuel element spacing unit (14) comprises numerous cells (16) for holding parallel fuel rods. Coolant flow channels are located between the cells, and the spacing unit has deflectors for the coolant. The deflectors extend into neighboring flow channels and are at an angle with respect to the vertical plane. The upper part of the deflector is wider than the lower part.
