diaminophenyl methanes (I) are produced by rearrangement of a dried condensate of aniline (A) and a methylene group containing agent (B) in a molar ratio of (A):(B) of 1.7-100 in the presence of acid catalysts under conditions to form (I) having a low polymer content with a significant 4,4'-isomer content, whereby the aniline (A) is essentially free of aliphatic amines.
