PURPOSE: An auto white balance device of digital camera and a method of the same are provided to compensate for a color effectively by generating a suitable white balance coefficient fitting for a varying light source if only the light source varies. CONSTITUTION: A solid imaging element transforms incident video information of light energy form into an analog electric signal. An A/D(analog/digital) converting unit converts the analog electric signal into a digital signal. A video signal process unit generates a digital video signal and color data including a luminance signal and a chromaticity signal from the digital signal, divides a screen into several windows and seeks for an addition of the luminance signal and a color difference signal of each window. A video encoder encodes the digital video signal into an appointed video format. An auto white balance control unit(210) is enabled by a coefficient generation signal(214) and generates an inner white coefficient(216) from the color data. An auto white balance prepositional control unit(212) compares a value variation in a current frame with a color difference signal value of a pixel selected in a former frame to detect a variation of light source, and enables the auto white balance control unit(210) to generate a new auto white balance coefficient(218) in case the variation of light source is detected.
