USING INTERNET PROTOCOL (IP) IN RADIO ACCESS NETWORK

A telecommunications system has a protocol architecture over an interface between nodes of the telecommunications system, the protocol architecture including Internet Protocol as a protocol above a link layer protocol in a transport network layer. The protocol architecture can be used over one or more of several interfaces, including the interface (Iu) between a radio access network (17) and a core network (19); the interface (Iub) between radio network controllers [RNCs] (24) and the base stations [BSs] (22) served thereby; and the interface (Iur) between a Source RNC (SRNC) and a Drift RNC (DRNC). The invention introduces a user plane protocol which is usable in a protocol stack for the packet switched (Iu-Ps) or a circuit switched (Iu-CS) implementation, as well as over the Iub and Iur interfaces, thereby enabling IP-transport in a radio access network such as UTRAN.
