The lamp operating circuit has an operating condition storage device (SP) for storing a value (SPA) representing the operating condition of the discharge lamp and a switching device for switching between a number of operating conditions, activated upon interruption in the power supply (U (N)) for the lamp operating circuit. The switching is only initiated when 2 interruptions of the power supply are detected within a defined time interval provided by a timing circuit (D).
