A braking device is described for the temporary braking of a tool drive shaft (18) on which a first rotating brake disc (46) sits with together which a second brake disc works, supported in non-rotating fashion on the housing, pre-tensioned by spring force (72) against the first brake disc and braking the first brake disc by friction when a lock (70) is released. Between the second brake disc and a housing part (52), spreading devices are located as a lock which in the brake release position hold the second brake disc raised from the first brake disc in a first stable position. The second brake disc is movable relative to the housing part supporting the spreading devices so that the spreading devices bend from the first stable position after exceeding an unstable intermediate position so that the brake discs are transferred by the brake springs into reciprocal engagement.
