A shear comprising upper and lower cutter blocks, each block consisting of a blade mounted in a bolster, which are slid in and out of the shear saddles lengthwise has, at one end of the blades, a transfer device 1 of the same length as the blades and aligned with them and comprising at least two pairs of ducts 4 to accommodate cutter blocks 8, 8<SP>1</SP>, 5 and 10. The ducts 4 are formed one on each side of each of two blocks 3 welded to a rotatable shaft 2. Each cutter block is retained in a duct by a known quick release device 9. In use, one pair of ducts is aligned with the blades in the shear and used cutter blocks such as 5, 10 are run out into the ducts 4. The shaft 2 is then rotated to align the other pair of ducts so that blocks 8, 8<SP>1</SP> may be introduced into the shear. The shaft 2 is rotated in end bearings (11), Fig. 2, not shown. The bearing block adjacent the shear may be in a wall having apertures for the passage of the cutter blocks. The transfer device may be releasably secured to the shear and/or mounted on rails. The cutter blocks are run in and out of the shear by means of cables (17), (18), Figs. 2 and 3, not shown, each cable being attached to a bolt (19) resiliently and removably mounted in a recess (20) in the bolster of the cutter block. Alternatively a toothed rack extending along the entire length of each cutter bar co-operates with driven pinions on the shear and on the transfer device. Other transfer means suggested are a friction wheel drive and pneumatic or hydraulic stepwise drives.</p> |
