Oxygen and hydrocarbons such as oil, natural gas, coal dust and the like are introduced into the lower portion 2 of a blast furnace 1, to supplement the normal combustion, by means of burners inserted in water-cooled nozzles 4 independent of the blast nozzles 3. The watercooled nozzles 4 are 'of smaller size than the blast nozzles 3 and are alternately arranged therewith in a plane lying in or above the plane of the blast nozzles 3. The burners are interchangeable. The ratib of oxygen to hydrocarbon is such as to produce on combustion a reducing gas of carbon monoxide and hydrogen.</p> |
