A drive/gear selector 14, for a manual or automatic transmission, has a lock 15 which prevents unauthorized use of a vehicle. The lock 15 provides for initial partial and subsequent complete release of the selector 14, whereby initial movement of the selector 14 triggers an authorization check of a transponder key (4, fig 1) by a security system. Upon confirmation of authorization, the lock 15 is disabled, via an electromagnetic device and a locking plunger 16, for complete release of the selector 14 which allows it to advance. In the process, the selector passes position 20 where a start trigger is actuated to start the vehicle engine. The selector may be moved to a stop position 21 to stop the engine, or alternatively, a switch 22 may be used. In either case, the status of other vehicle operation means, eg handbrake, footbrake, accelerator pedal, clutch etc, is firstly checked to ensure motor stop is permitted. |
