Motor comprises stator (17) and rotor (23) with axial indicator coils (Cr, Cf) at either end of the stator. A differential amplifier is used for differential amplification of the signals from the indicator coils. The differential amplifier generates a signal with one polarity if the rotor is axially displaced in one direction and a signal of opposite polarity if it is displaced in the opposite direction. A dead zone switch ensures no signal is produced if the rotor play is within operating limits. The degree of wear can be indicated using an LED bar display or using an analogue display. An Independent claim is made for an axial wear indicator device that indicates when a limit has been exceeded.
