PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a recording system and an ink jet recorder in which optimal recording control can be performed automatically at low cost depending on the type of recording medium. SOLUTION: In the recording system comprising a recorder 1 and a host unit 2, the recorder 1 delivers the reflection quantity of a recording medium read out through a photosensor unit 119 to the host unit 2. Based on the reflection quantity received from the recorder 1, the host unit 2 determines the reflectance with reference to the reflection quantity of a white reference sheet 119, determines the type of a relevant recording medium with reference to a decision table for making the type of a recording medium to correspond with the reflectance prestored at a data base section 203 and delivers the data of the type of recording medium thus determined to the recorder 1. The recorder 1 performs recording control depending on the type of recording medium.
