PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a flat coating material for electrodeposition that has a good dispersibility in water, provide a coating bath showing little compositional change with the passage of time, requires only simple bath control to secure consistent coating qualities, and allows low temperature baking, as well as to provide an electrodeposition coating method therewith. SOLUTION: The coating material is an anionic flat coating material for electrodeposition comprising (A) an acrylic resin obtained by copolymerizing (a) anα,β-ethylenically unsaturated carboxylic acid monomer, (b) a hydroxy group-containingα,βethylenically unsaturated monomer, (c) a cross-linkable functional group-containingα,β-ethylenically unsaturated monomer and (d)α,β- ethylenically unsaturated monomer other than the above-describedα,β- ethylenically unsaturated monomers, and (B) a melamine resin wherein isobutyl ether group occupies >=50% of the total alkyl ether groups. An electrodeposition coating method is provided for using the material.
