PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a rail minimal in oxide inclusions and excellent in heavy shelling damage resistance. SOLUTION: The rail is: a rail excellent in heavy shelling damage resistance, which has a chemical composition consisting of, by weight, 0.5-0.9% C, 0.2-0.6% Si, 0.5-1.6% Mn, <=0.03% P, <=0.01% S, 0-1.1% Cr and the balance essentially iron and in which total oxygen concentration in the rail is regulated to <=30 ppm; a rail excellent in heavy shelling damage resistance, which has the above chemical composition and further contains 2-8 ppm sol.Al; and a rail excellent in heavy shelling damage resistance, which has the above chemical composition and also has oxide inclusions composed essentially of Al2O3-SiO2-MnO compound inclusions and having a composition consisting of, by weight, 10-20% Al2O3, 30-50% MnO and the balance SiO2.
