PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a serial printer which can print at high speed. SOLUTION: When a specified number of characters are contained in the print ranges at the hand and tail of a line in the full span of one line, the specified number of characters at the head of one line are printed at low speed. A carrier 3 is then returned back to the original print start position and characters subsequent to the specified number of characters of one line are printed at high speed. When printing has ended expect a specified number of characters at the tail of one line, the carrier 3 is returned back to the position of the specified number of characters to the tail of one line. Subsequently, the specified number of characters at the tail of one line are printed at low speed.
