Preparation of sorbic acid and its esters or their derivatives comprises reacting propyne with an acrylate using a ruthenium-containing transition metal catalyst, giving a high yield. Preparation of sorbic acid and its esters or their derivatives of formula H3CCH=CHCH=C(R2>)C(O)OR1> (I) comprises reacting propyne with a compound of formula H2C=C(R2>)C(O)OR1> (II) using a ruthenium-containing transition metal catalyst. R1>H, 1-6C alkyl or alkenyl (sic), 3-6C cycloalkyl or phenyl; and R2>H or 1-3C alkyl. |
