PURPOSE: An MPEG decoder and a control method thereof are provided to use the half region of a memory as an extra data storage region by storing the decoded B(Bidirectionally predictive) picture data in the half region of the memory. CONSTITUTION: Respective pictures are decoded in the sequence of I(Intra), P(Predictive), B1, B2, and B3. Decoded pictures are displayed in the sequence of I, B1, B2, and B3. When processing a frame picture, the object and sequence of decoding are not in accordance with the object and sequence of display. Time lag exists between the decoding time and display time. Time lag also exists between the decoding time of an upper rank frame and the decoding time of a lower rank frame in a cycle. Time lag exists between two field cycles. A top field is displayed over the entire front half cycle of a field cycle, and a bottom field is displayed on the entire rear half cycle of the field cycle.
