A filter plate assembly for use as a filter insert, comprising several stacked disc-shaped filter plates, the filter fabric of each of which is framed by annular frames of plastics material connected by radial ribs, and which are retained on a tubular supporting member, permitting the passage of filtrate, with which cover ring plates are associated, is characterised by the provision of a spring coaxial with the filter plate assembly, which spring co-operates with the cover ring plates (one at each end of the spring), to effect the bracing of the assembly. In Fig. 1 each filter plate consists of fabric 3, annular frames 4, 5 and radial ribs (not shown); a helical tension spring 8 has rings 9 or 10 secured to its ends, flanges 11 or 12 on the rings engaging the inner edges of annular cover ring plates 13 or 14 to brace the assembly. The spring 8 here serves as the tubular supporting member. In Fig. 3 the tubular supporting member is in two parts 81, 82 whose outer ends bear on one or other of the cover ring plates and whose inner ends are forced together axially by a compression spring 83 surrounding a flanged sleeve 20. Fig. 4 is similar to Fig. 3 but is inverted. Tubular part 82 is omitted, and the flanged sleeve (now numbered 23) is closed at one end 25 and connected there to a cover plate 130. A further compression spring 27 has one end retained in a groove 26 of plate 130 by a spider 28, this spring serving to provide for compensation in length when the assembly is accommodated in a casing.
