At least one optical fibre (3) for incorporating into a composite laminate is connected to a fibre optic ferrule (1), to which a dummy ferrule (2) is connected, and then the fibre, ferrule and dummy are baked in the composite laminate in such a position that the ferrule will be set back from the finished laminate edge contours. The laminate is prepared and the edge surfaces are worked on to give the desired shape, the dummy being removed before or after finishing the laminate edges.
