Means for maching the edges of a metal strip 3 comprises pairs of tools 17 and associated rollers 16 mounted on slides 11 movable freely transversely of the strip. The function of each pair of tools, 17 may be taken over by duplicate pairs of tools 18 whilst the machine is operating. The last two tools on a slide 13 bevel the edges. To distribute wear on the tools ; all the slides 11 are moved intermittently in a circular motion by a device 20 acting through ratchet wheels carrying eccentrics 19 and slide-carrying brackets 7, 8. The slide 13 takes part only in the horizontal component of movement of the brackets. Between movements, the eccentrics are clamped by friction pads and springs which can be released by fluid-pressure. Adjustable spring-pressure is applied to rollers 4 to hold the strip on the bed 1. The rollers 16 are adjusted initially to the width of the strip but can yield against springs if necessary. Each slide 11, Fig. 10, carries an adjusting screw 62 for each tool and clamping screws 56. The spacing of the brackets 7, 8 is adjusted by screws and interconnecting chains (67), Fig. 1 (not shown). In modifications, the brackets are moved by hydraulic means or screws, or each slide has its own control brackets, or the slide 13 is moved as are the slides 11 and the tools are moved thereon to maintain the same size and bevelled shape of the strip. |
