PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a light source device and a projector which can promote downsizing. SOLUTION: This light source device 8 has a judging section 260 for judging the presence or absence of the use of a light source. The judging section 260 has a switching member 261 for shorting the two terminals of a detecting substrate for detecting the information therefrom from each other. This switching member 261 is formed of a thermosensitive deformation member. The switching member 261 may therefore be disposed in an area near the light source and the light source device 8 can be disposed within the height range of a lamp housing 184. Consequently, since there is no need for projecting the projector to a height direction, the downsizing of the light source device and eventually the projector is made possible.
