PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a sunken kotatsu complying with thin flooring material, such as the floor of a barrier free specification with thin tatami mats. SOLUTION: The thickness of either of a first top board 9 and a second top board 11 is same with the thickness of flooring material 13. The downward pendent length of a first vertical board 10 is longer than the downward pendent length of a second vertical 12. Leg holding metals 16 are attached on the inner surface part of the first vertical board 10 for supporting the legs 15 of a table on the metals 16. A frame 3 is filled in around opening of the floor 2 overlaying the second vertical board 12 on the inner side surface of a furnace box 1 on the side a sash bar for receiving a grating 6 is arranged and overlaying the first vertical board 10 on the first inner side surface of the furnace box 1 on the side the sash bar for receiving the grating 6 is not arranged.
