PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To solve a problem that the capacity of a memory becomes insufficient when picture data is sampled and summed up after restoring it since the capacity of latest picture data is large. SOLUTION: In the case a high speed processing is desired when the feature quantity of a picture is acquired for automatically correcting picture data, it is judged whether thumb nail data is included in picture data or not (step 108). When thumb nail data exists, 'thumb nail' is set in a sampling flag (step 110). a buffer for development, which corresponds to thumb nail data, is secured (steps 116 and 120). Thumb nail data is developed to the buffer and the data are summed up on all pixels (steps 126 to 132). Thus, speed can be improved compared to a case when original picture data is developed and is sampled.
