PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To improve brightness of a liquid crystal display device. SOLUTION: A cell gap is maintained by the spacer produced by patterning, while light is condensed on the pixels. The brightness is improved by the following methods. (1) A coating film, having a different refractive index from that of the liquid crystal material, is formed on the spacer to refract light. (2) The light is refracted and totally reflected on the spacer interface. (3) The light is reflected by the metal spacer. The liquid crystal is driven by a transverse electric field, so as not induce disclination of the liquid crystal by the line of electric force to be generated on the metal spacer interface. |
