PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To realize excellent running performance and durability of a magnetic recording medium by using a lubricant having a lubricating effect kept for a long period and enhancing the adhesion stability between a protective film and the lubricant. SOLUTION: The magnetic recording medium provided with a non-magnetic substrate 2, a magnetic layer 3 formed on the non-magnetic substrate 2, a protective film 4 formed on the magnetic layer 3 and having a surface top-coated with an aromatic alcohol and an outermost layer holding the lubricant containing an ester compound of perfluoropolyether having a hydroxyl group at the terminal of its molecule and a long chain carboxylic acid is characterized in that the quantity of the aromatic alcohol is more than the quantity of the ester compound.
