The steering mechanism has a steering wheel (1) which is mechanically coupled to the steered vehicle wheels (5) via a steering drive (3) and at least one track rod (4), with a setting device (10) mounted on the vehicle chassis for automatically-controlled displacement of the steering drive in the movement direction of the track rod, to allow steering of the wheels independent of the driver in a critical situation. A shock absorbing elastic coupling is provided between the setting device and the steering drive or between the setting device and the chassis.
