An electric drive has an electric machine (1) comprising a stator and a rotor, a power supply, at least one cooling device, at least one heating system, and at least one measurement sensor for ascertaining operation-relevant data. The data obtained from the measurement sensor (12-16)is supplied to a control device (17) and from this, sets up an optimal thermal state for the drive, its mounting location and its working point, according to a specifiable parameter assignment matched to the electric drive. The measurement sensors (12-16) determine one or more of the following variables; the temperature in and/or at the drive, the electric machine revs, the ambient temperature, the air humidity inside and outside, the temperature and/or volume flow-rate of the cooling medium, and the load on the drive.
