The separator for removing individual sheets of paper from a stack in a processing machine has a transporter with a contact surface (17) which is elastically or plastically deformable, so that its shape can be altered to correspond to that of the top sheet (12)in the stack. The shape of this sheet is measured by a device which is connected to an adjuster. This moves a series of vertical rods which adjust the shape of the contact surface.
