A slide gate plate mechanism for the continuous casting of molten metal includes a gate plate assembly (10). The gate plate assembly (10) is connected to an upper nozzle (28) disposed below a vessel and is disposed above an elongated lower nozzle (26) that directs flow of molten metal. Each plate of the gate plate assembly (10) includes an opening that forms a portion of a passageway for the molten metal. The gate plate assembly (10) comprises a gate plate (16) that is moved so as to open and close the passageway, a lower plate (22) connected to an upper surface of the nozzle (26), and a groove disposed in a bottom surface of the lower plate (22) around the lower plate opening. The mechanism further comprises a control device for regulating flow of inert gas and graphite into the groove. Also included is a flowmeter that prevents air aspiration.
