A computer system (10) including a removable CPU module (14) within a Device Bay (16) compatible enclosure (12), eliminating the need for a separate computer installed in a different enclosure and connected to a Device Bay enclosure by USB (106) and IEEE 1394 (104) data buses. The device Bay enclosure (12) of the present invention is designated to include a removable CPU module (106) along with a plurality of additional bays (75A-D) for adding peripheral devices (108A, 108B) to the enclosure. USB (106) and IEEE 1394 (104) serial buses connect the CPU to the peripheral devices (108A-B). The CPU module includes a processor (132), RAM (134), video components, and possibly some type of mass storage, such as a hard drive, and multiple I/O components. The enclosure having a plurality of bays (75A-D) is electronically accessible from the front and the rear. The enclosure may accommodate a number of USB or IEEE 1394 peripherals and is accessible to other enclosures to support virtually an unlimited expansion of peripheral devices. Each enclosure contains a number of walk-up ports for convenient front panel or rear panel connection of additional peripheral devices.
