In a spline connection between a hub 12, splined on a shaft 10, and an axially slidable sleeve 22, rattle between spline teeth 20, 23 on the hub 12 and sleeve 22, respectively, is prevented by preferably three balls (35), Fig. 2 (not shown), each within a radially extending bore 21 in the hub 12 and spring-urged radially outward to engage two of the teeth 23 to centre them with respect to teeth 20. The bores and associated balls and springs may be formed in the sleeve 22, and cylindrical members having a hemi-spherical end may replace the balls. The sleeve 22 forms part of a synchronizing clutch wherein the sleeve 22 is axially slidable to clutch a gear 25 to the shaft 10, and in which the synchronizer structure includes a blocking ring 27; thrust elements 28 mounted in slots 29 in hub 12; and a spring-loaded ball detent 30. In the splined coupling between the hub 12 and the shaft 10, splines 13 on hub 12 extend straight axially, and the splines 11 on the shaft 10 have a helix angle a, preferably less than 1 degree. . |
