<p>The contents of the clarification bed are a biologically activated sediment (11) and the clarified water (1) above it. A telescopic pipe (20) passes through these layers and the base. The top of this pipe is formed into a flat disk (6) leading to a tapered inlet (7). A float (2,3), encased in a dish (4) with a central, open, tube (8), floats above the inlet. As the water empties through the pipe (20) and the tube is withdrawn into the sediment the float sinks until foot (9) of tube (8) sit on the taper (7) and seal off the flow. This means that the flow of water outside pipe (20) is generally horizontal so that the sediment can remain undisturbed. The function of tube (8) is that of an air release so that the float can rise, or sink, freely. In the next skimming cycle, as pipe (20) is raised and the float passes out of the sediment, the clear water trapped inside the float valve flows out first to flush off any deposit on plate (6).</p> |
