A length adjusting device for a suction pipe having inner and outer pipes of a vacuum cleaner includes a sleeve fixed to one end of the outer pipe, a locking plate inserted in the penetrating slot of the sleeve, two circular arc-shaped pressing plates, fixed between restricting projections of the sleeve, for restricting the locking plate, and for selectively releasing the restrict of the locking plates, and a sliding cover movably coupled to the outer circumference of the sleeve to be positioned at a certain position. A positioning recess is formed on a certain portion of the outer circumference of the sleeve, a supporting projection is formed on the inner circumference of the sliding cover for partitioning the positioning recess into two recesses, and coil springs are inserted in the two partitioned recesses of the positioning recess, respectively. The respective elements are made of synthetic resin. Since at least two locking recesses are simultaneously fixed at certain positions, the inner pipe can be firmly fixed even with excessive external shock.
