An oligonucleotide for the amplification and qualitative and quantitative detection of RNA sequences derived from 16S rRNA genes or gene fragments, is new. An oligonucleotide for the amplification and qualitative and quantitative detection of RNA sequences derived from 16S rRNA genes or gene fragments, where the oligonucleotide, its complement, reverse or reverse complement or derivative which specifically binds DNA encoding RNA for 16S rRNA has one of the sequences fully defined in the specification. Independent claims are also included for the following: (i) amplifying 16S rRNA genes, comprising contacting the RNA or RNA of a test sample with the above oligonucleotides and detecting hybridization to show 16S rRNA specific RNA and/or DNA sequences from bacteria; and (ii) a microarray comprising the claimed oligonucleotide.
