A keyboard (100) which may be utilized in either an expanded or contracted state. A keyboard (100) is comprised of an expandable and compressible housi ng (106) which supports a plurality of elastic belts (136). Keyswitch assemblie s (140) are fastened to the elastic belt (136). When the keyboard housing (106 ) is expanded, the elastic belts (136) are stretched, and the distance between the keys (102) is increased. The keytops (102) can be of variable size so th at upon expansion, they increase in size.
