PROCESS FOR PRODUCTION OF HIGH-PURITY BIS- beta -HYDROXYETHYL TEREPHTHALATE

A process for production of high-purity bis- beta -hydroxyethyl terephthalate, which comprises the step (1) of esterifying crude terephthalic acid with ethylene glycol and/or ethylene oxide to obtain a reaction product containing bis- beta -hydroxyethyl terephthalate, the step (2) of converting the reaction product formed in the step (1) into a solution of bis- beta -hydroxyethyl terephthalate (solute) in ethylene glycol (solvent), if necessary, with additional ethylene glycol, and then removing ions from the solution to form a deionized solution, the step (3) of distilling the deionized solution formed in the step (2) to recover crude bis- beta -hydroxyethyl terephthalate with low-boiling matter distilled away, and the step (4) of subjecting the crude bis- beta -hydroxyethyl terephthalate obtained in the step (3) to molecular distillation to recover bis- beta -hydroxyethyl terephthalate as distillate.
