PURPOSE: A method of processing a defect of a hard disk is provided to have spare sectors per cylinder instead of per track, to reduce the size occupied by the spare sectors, and to replace reassigned sectors with a spare sector of the nearest cylinder, so as to decrease a seek time for reading/writing the reassigned sectors. CONSTITUTION: Spare sectors are set on the last track of a cylinder, without putting one spare sector per track. If inferior sectors are more than the set spare sectors, inferior sectors which are not processed by a present cylinder are reassigned to an unused spare sector of the nearest neighboring cylinder.
