A bearing alloy comprising (in % by weight): tin 5-10 %, copper 0.7-1.3 %, nickel 0.7-1.3 %, silicon 1.5-3.5 %, vanadium 0.1-0.3 % and manganese 0.1-0.3, with the balance being aluminium and unavoidable impurities. Also, a plain bearing comprising a backing material 12 (e.g. steel or bronze) onto which a layer of the bearing alloy 14 is bonded. There may be an interlayer 16 of aluminium or aluminium alloy between the backing material 12 and the bearing alloy 14. The outer surface of the bearing alloy 14 may be provided with an overlay coating layer.
