PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an electric discharge machining method capable of smooth and easy machining of a metal member having a ceramic coating layer. SOLUTION: A conductive layer is formed by applying paste containing conductive grain to a machined part in the metal member having the ceramic coating layer and onto the surface of the ceramic coating layer in its vicinity, and a current carrying element constructed of a conductive material and electrically connecting the conductive layer and the metal member together is arranged on the surface of the ceramic coating layer before/after formation of the conductive layer. Then, the conductive layer is dried and hardened, and by means of an electric discharge machining electrode, the conductive layer and the ceramic coating layer are penetrated and at least a part of the metal member is removed.
