In accordance with the present invention, there is now provided an improveme nt to current electromagnetic testers for detecting loss of metallic area and i nternal and external defects in elongated magnetically permeable objects. More specifically, the improvement comprises the addition to the tester of means for increasing the linear reso lution of the metallic area measurement of the object, whereby signals obtained correspond more closely to the variations in the metallic area of the elongated object.
