PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a method for producing an aldehyde in good operating efficiency by controlling a catalyst poisoning material in a hydroformylation reaction. SOLUTION: This method for reacting an olefinically unsaturated compound with carbon monoxide and hydrogen in the presence of a hydroformylation catalyst containing a group VIII metal in the periodic table and an organic phosphorus compound comprises controlling the amount of a sulfur hydride and/or selenium hydride mixed with the reaction system as impurities so as to be <=3 in the molar ratio thereof to the group VIII metal in the catalyst- containing liquid.
