Speed trap detection and warning system

A speed trap detection and warning system for a vehicle (9) comprises a GPS or mobile telephone signal receiver and processor which calculates the location, speed and direction of travel of the vehicle (9). Memory (49,50) stores the location of speed traps (5,6), the operating direction of each the speed limit at each and the road on which the trap is situated. Processor (43) compares the calculated data with the stored data, and alerts the driver if the vehicle is within a predetermined distance of a speed trap which is operational for the vehicle's direction of travel and the vehicle's speed is greater than the road speed limit. Display (25) displays to the driver the speed limit for the road on which the vehicle is travelling and the road number on which the trap is situated.
