A vehicle door mounting hinge having means to hold the door open comprises a first knuckle member 1 which is secured to or integral with the door A, and a second knuckle member 2 attached to the vehicle body B by bolts 5. The first member is pivoted upon each end of a pin 3 inserted through two eyes 2a on the second member, and carries a locking pin 6, which may be fixed or rotatable or surrounded by a rotatable sleeve. A doubly curved leaf spring 4 is attached by the bolts 5 to the second knuckle member, and extends towards the locking pin in the form of a trough 4c and a crest 4b. When the door is opened from the position in Fig. 1, the locking pin first stresses the spring towards the pivot and rides over the crest 4b, and then engages in the trough 4c to retain the door in the open position shown in Fig. 3. In other embodiments, the spring action may be reinforced either by a resilient cylindrical rubber block between the face of the knuckle element 2 and the concave side of 4b, or by tabs extending from the free end of the spring to bear resiliently against the eyes 2a, Alternatively the knuckle member 2 may be mounted on the door and the member 1 mounted on the body.</p> |
